ABSTRACT: This paper describes the design of an omni-directional ranging system. The system has been developed as a data acquisition front-end for a blind person navigation aide. The system employs an ultrasonic echolocation technique for identifying obstacles. The ranging information is transmitted to a desktop PC, which uses the information to generate a spatialized acoustic map of the surrounding obstacles.
